Survey Thursday - Email?

April 9th, 2009 by World Wide Ed

Back in the glory days of the web, us peeps with email addresses were few and far between. As students, we  were hooked up with one by default (with an ugly @uhunix.uhcc.hawaii.edu suffix), but that was back when we had to log into a UNIX shell and check it via a program called Pine. Good lord! uhunix? Pine!? I'm choking myself up with all the memories! LOL!

Nowadays, every Bill, Sergey, and Jerry Tom, Dick and Harry has an email account from such free services as Hotmail, Gmail and Yahoo! Heck, even my momma has not one, but three that is checked on the regular. ISPs like us, offer accounts as part of our services: up to 10 accounts per Road Runner customer (via the sexy @hawaii.rr.com domain :P ) to be exact.

Whereas this question would've been "Do you have an email account?" in a past WWE column in the Ka Leo, today, I gotsta up my game and stay current with what's happening on the world wide interwebs. Errrbody pretty much has email. It's just a matter of provider. With that said...

* Which service do you use for email and why?

I'm a Gmailer fo sho. Their flexibility with forwarding, filtering, sorting, account management, header privacy, etc. is off the chain! There's no comparison. And I didn't even mention the searching aspect! Plus my account ties in nicely to the billion other Google "products" I use. I honestly don't know how/if I'd survive without my Gmail and Google Calendar. Scary!

K, your turn! Share, share!

Have a good weekend y'all! Das right! I get tomorrow off. Wahoooooooo!

  1. Coconut Willy:

    My ISP is HawTel so I gots my email wit dem too. I should probably transition to gmail or something so it won't be so traumatic if I drop HawTel. I do have accounts with gmail and hotmail and yahoo tho.

  2. kuya.d:

    I fall asleep early, so I wake up early.

    My email account is with yahoo. It was my first email account and since I got it waaaaay long time ago, my address is simple and easy to remember, don't you think it's easy to remember, Ed?

  3. bB:

    my personal main account is yahoo. but, i get three more address that i use too. but, my rr address i forget the password so i haven't used it in a while.

    for work, i get a couple of address that i use and sometimes my one of personal because the work ones don't hook up with the iphone. i think gotta pay extra for that and i'm not going to do it for free. :lol:

  4. kate:

    Good morning!

    I have to check 4 email addresses everyday. 3 of them are on Yahoo and 1 is for work. The first Yahoo address I got now gets lots of junk (Lands End must be desperate for business because they send me *sale!!!* junk everyday) so I have a second address that I use for *special* people (Ed, you must be one of those special people because you have that address *wink wink*! Ha!). The third is for basketball league correspondence. Email keeps me busy busy because it's the way I keep in touch with my friends and family. My work address is for work only.

    Wait...I just remembered...I have one more address with verizon that I rarely check. I got it when we signed up for FIOS.

  5. hemajang:

    Got hawaii.rr.com for my "secure" account and yahoo as my main everyday account. Yahoo does a pretty good job of filtering spam. I also have .msn and gmail that I infrequently check. And my work email account that I check 7 days a week.

    Does anyone know of a good and free online dairy or log program? I have a weekly DayMinder book to write daily events and log exercise/running info but would like to go online. Most calendars on email accounts are too short and not for writing narratives.

  6. Ynaku:

    HawTel is my Home primary, but since I carry my work Blackberry, I give people that one in case they need to contact me right away.

    But I have been using MSN for other stuff. Actually I have 2 on msn. One for when I travel and the other for "JUNK STUFF" and for those I no like respond with.

    I get YAHOO and Gmail but don;t check them very often.

    Shoots I remember the days of Telemail. Then we had Banyan then Lotus Notes, now we use Outlook at work. So much email. Now we have instant messaging (but can save that for another topic)

  7. che:

    Hi Ed, I just have one personal e-mail site at yahoo. You needed to open a yahoo e-mail to use the fantasy football site.

  8. Kel Sr.:

    Aloha Ed,

    Me too, I'm off tommorrow!

    Have a good one!

  9. JB:

    My main personal account is with hotmail (I had it before gmail was born). For "official" e-mail I have a gmail account, and when I go to a website I'm not sure about, I use a yahoo e-mail. Only website get that e-mail account, so I can go in periodically and delete everything without reading it. Then I have a work account with Oceanic/roadrunner.

    I prefer hotmail b/c mail automagically gets put into my folders (like in Outlook). Hotmail also texts me when messages from certain people arrive so I know when I should log into my e-mail. Gmail only forwards the whole e-mail, last time I checked.

  10. MakiSushi:

    I get three accounts, one with hawaii.rr.com, two with yahoo; use couple accounts for internet stuffs like ebay, amazon, etc. and da other for talking story with friends li'dat. and get one work account too. I loves email!

    Eh, you folks lucky you off tomorrow! Why is it called Good Friday anyway, isn't that the day Jesus was crucified? Okay, sorry for dat downer.

    Happy Easter Ed and everybody!

  11. EMM386:

    Pine. Old school for sure. I was an engineering student, so my e-mail account had an @wiliki.eng.hawaii.edu at the end of it. These days I have several accounts. I have a yahoo one so signing up for junk (so all the junk mail goes there), but I use my work account for most of my mail.

  12. kako mochi:

    my first was hotmail, then my work email, and now my gmail :)

    so now i use hotmail for all my online shopping and that keeps my gmail pretty neat & tidy!

  13. NeedaHobby:

    I have Hawn Tel. Like Coconut Willy mentioned, it's my ISP and I just use the email that comes with the service. Also, have my work email and now I get messages through Facebook too.

    @kate - I'm glad Dial Idol had it wrong and that your boy didn't get the boot!

  14. rayboyjr:

    Got several accounts with RR that I use for normal stuff. Also have some hotmail and yahoo accounts. Can't remember some of them already cause I only use a few regularly.

    Use the hotmail address for blogging sites like this, gaming/poker sites, and porn, er ... I mean web chatrooms where you gotta put in an e-mail adress. ;) Just kidding, I don't ever visit poker sites!

  15. rayboyjr:

    Hey Ed ... I've been placed in moderation exile ... why??? Am I blogging too much???

    Release me, release me ...

    Oh, I get it ... maybe for certain words that I used. Oh well. Have a good one!

  16. skycastles:

    I used to have like three hotmail accounts back in the day, but I've transitioned over to one on yahoo and four on gmail. I have multiple on gmail for various projects I'm working on. Also have a roadrunner account, which I don't use all that much and one for work.

  17. skycastles:

    @ hemajang - I just joined the livestrong.com community. I think there might be a food diary, food log and blog on the site. Haven't had much time to explore though. Think you gotta go to My Plate for all the food stuff. The rest of the site looked like health education, support, etc. Also, it's related to Lance Armstrong and his non-profit livestrong.org.

  18. S Ticket:

    Yo Ed,
    I remember the UH Unix stuff, and if you google my real name it pulls up these old lab reports I did back in undergrad in 95'...scary those are still around....hahaha.
    Anyway, My 2 primary ones are gmail and the UH email I got when I was in grad school. I keep the UH one because so many of my friends still send stuff to that vs. the gmail. But I gotta agree, I like my gmail account.

  19. snow:

    i use my roadrunner e-mail addy (of course!) as my main e-mail but i also have a work e-mail addy. i used to have hotmail, which i used for all my junk e-mail and online ordering, but someone hacked into it! :mad: they also hacked into my yahoo e-mail, as well as some other online accounts. :mad: sooooo... i only recently took the jump back into the pool and opened up a gmail account! however, i'm still hesitant to use it... !! :roll:

  20. uji:

    hmmm, get one gmail, two yahoos, one mor for LA job, 2-3 for HI job, most linked through one main account and/or one of two cellular PDA devices, one for HI, one for LA...

    whoa, am linkedin 24/7, which is esp. important, as we're in a client-service biz in LA, and a medical service biz in HI..

    these days, you really can be two places at once in our virtual world..

    only appropriate that we have a very cool collective consciousness community like WIWIES and other HA blogs to help keep our bearings in this fast-moving whirl..

  21. mcat:

    i got a yahoo, two gmails, & a UH one!

    whoa... i guess everyone has multiple emails... each one has a purpose!

  22. World Wide Ed:

    * Coconut Willy:
    My ISP is HawTel so I gots my email wit dem too.

    How dare you C Dubbs! :P

    * kuya.d:

    Maika`i duyas. My Gmail is da same. Benefit of being web savvy back in the day I guess yeah? Hehe!

    * bB:
    but, my rr address i forget the password so i haven't used it in a while.

    Hah!? Don't you know there are valuable newsletters you are missing out on beeBz!? ;)

    * kate:
    The third is for basketball league correspondence.

    You ball it up k-train?

    * hemajang:
    Does anyone know of a good and free online dairy or log program? I have a weekly DayMinder book to write daily events and log exercise/running info but would like to go online. Most calendars on email accounts are too short and not for writing narratives.

    You ever try Google Calendar hemmaz? Not exactly sure how you need to use your daily log, but it's pretty off the chain if you ask me. You can set privacy levels, share, etc. Another option is to set up your own blog like Wordpress, etc. and just lock all your posts down so only you can see it. Hope this helps!

    * Ynaku:
    Now we have instant messaging (but can save that for another topic)

    Oooh, interesting... Topic noted! :P

    * che:
    Hi Ed, I just have one personal e-mail site at yahoo. You needed to open a yahoo e-mail to use the fantasy football site.

    LOL! That's how they get us yeah che? Speaking of which, are you in for the WWE Fantasy Football league this season? 8)

    * Kel Sr.:
    Me too, I'm off tommorrow!

    Awwrrright!

    * JB:
    Then I have a work account with Oceanic/roadrunner.

    Wait, you work hurr JB? And yeah, Gmail can only forward entire messages I think. But if you have Blackberry, you can point it there and set it on the Blackberry side. Sounds like you got your system down though. :)

    * MakiSushi:
    Happy Easter Ed and everybody!

    You too Maks! :)

    * EMM386:
    Pine. Old school for sure. I was an engineering student, so my e-mail account had an @wiliki.eng.hawaii.edu at the end of it.

    LOL! I used to hang out with engineers back in the day. They used to use school resources to MUD. Maybe you played with them? LOL!

    * kako mochi:
    so now i use hotmail for all my online shopping and that keeps my gmail pretty neat & tidy!

    I hear ya. I have like 10 accounts, all doing forwarding and filering and masking, etc. I try to keep my "main" one nice and clean. Did you know about the + addressing filter method for gmail Moch? It's where you can add a "+keyword" with your email to tell yourself where it came from: e.g. kakomochi+landsend@gmail.com (see http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=12096&topic=13271 ). It's friggen awesome!

    * NeedaHobby:
    I have Hawn Tel. Like Coconut Willy mentioned, it's my ISP and I just use the email that comes with the service.

    How dare you too Hobbz! :P

    * rayboyjr:
    Use the hotmail address for blogging sites like this, gaming/poker sites, and porn, er ... I mean web chatrooms where you gotta put in an e-mail adress. Just kidding, I don't ever visit poker sites!

    LOLOL! Are you comparing WWE to porn and poker sites, er, just poker?

    * skycastles:
    I used to have like three hotmail accounts back in the day, but I've transitioned over to one on yahoo and four on gmail. I have multiple on gmail for various projects I'm working on. Also have a roadrunner account, which I don't use all that much and one for work.

    I'm kinda similar to you sky. Actually started on Hotmail. Was hard to take that initial leap to change/migrate, but once I did, there was no turning back.

    * S Ticket:
    I remember the UH Unix stuff, and if you google my real name it pulls up these old lab reports I did back in undergrad in 95'...scary those are still around....hahaha.

    Woah. Any pictures S Ticket? That could be Photoshop gold! LOL!

    * snow:
    i use my roadrunner e-mail addy (of course!) as my main e-mail but i also have a work e-mail addy.

    Wahoo snow! *high five* :P

    * uji:

    True dat mcat. Gotta be smart these days with all those crazy email scrapers/harvesters. :(

  23. uji:

    yes, edward, you appear to have hit the nail quite squarely on the head..

    we bad, we nationwide.. :lol:

  24. uji:

    oh, an' also, chaos and confusion are our middle names..

    eh, what you mean we, winston, you get one mouse in yo' pocket?

    uh, yes, a rather large and hungry one... you get cheese? :lol:

  25. tita leerz:

    Oh man! Pine just about killed me. It's like playing space invaders on atari! LOL! At least when we was in college, we only emailed each other. Everyone was "in house" pretty much. So we never had to enter the entire 4-name-domain-name (hhhmmm...must be Filipino. unix domain had 4 names! LOL). Just had to enter username. But that was when everything was all DOS. Now we all fancy with windows and html. No laugh, but I dunno how use html. I only only how program in C language.

    So now, in the era of being spoiled, I used Gmail because get plenny space! But I have two of them-one fo work and da oddah for myself. I use my "will-not-be-published" account for "official stuff." And get better filters on there than even Gmail, IMHO. My hotmail is now defunct because too many people tink I need viagra or that i like make friends in nigeria.

  26. tita leerz:

    oh, i get hitel too..sorry, ah, not beep beep.

  27. tita leerz:

    @EMM ...so were you pre C? i'm a wiliki drop out. then i went to follow ed. ha!
    cc compile

    blah blah blah
    forget t close loop. program keeps going and going and going...
    kill switch or just kill the modem connection at 24.4 and try dial up again if someone else in your class didn't grab the next spot to compile his program on-line...and den you gotta wait all night until aftah seinfeld when your roommates not going use da phone and accidentally hang you up when you about half way through compiling your program.
    oh, the memories.

  28. tita leerz:

    ed...i used to always go on IRC. some things never change. look where i am now. LOL

  29. tita leerz:

    SO, I get dis friend. He special. Maybe little bit slow. But he email me on facebook fo check my regular email cuz he sent me sometin on dat one. Funny guy. Yeah, Ed?!

    ahh, but for the help and kindness of strangers..

  31. skycastles:

    Talkin about flashback and IRC, you guys remember chatting at HCU or what? That was all the rage in the mid-90s I think?

    Back then I had dial up and it was so slow. Plus I'd get kicked off all the time. And the chatrooms could only hold so many people, and once you got kicked off someone was right there to take your place.

    Then you had to PM your friends to go to an empty room because you couldn't get back in the first room. LOL Those were good times man.

  32. skycastles:

    Hey, how come I'm in moderation?

    Oh wells, what I was going to say is that I just thought of something funny. Back in the HCU days, I used to use skycastles as my user name too. No more imagination to think of a new one I guess. :)

  33. uji:

    skycastles is a mystical, romantic, whimsical name that one would be hard-pressed to improve upon, skycastles..

    it's important in life to recognize when, even if only for a moment, we've gotten something exactly right...

  34. EMM386:

    @ED

    MUDding. Haven't thought about that in years. If you think about it, those were the precursors to the modern MassMOG or MMRPG. Yeah, I used to MUD back in the day.

  35. hemajang:

    Ed my friend, I took your Wordpress suggestion and signed up. Started this morning and it looks like a winner for my intent and purpose of writing a private dairy/log. Much mahalo.
