Survey Thursday - Are You a Fan of UH Men's Basketball?
February 19th, 2009 by World Wide Ed* Are you a fan of the University of Hawaii Men's Basketball program? More importantly, are you going to the game this Saturday?
I know, I know. It's hard to be one after a gut-wrenching loss to Nevada last Saturday at home (*crossing my fingers for their nationally televised matchup against Fresno State today*)... but now, there's more reason to come support the 'Bows this Saturday at 7:05PM at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Not only is it the second to the last home game for the season (wipe back those tears!), it is the big Oceanic Time Warner Cable sponsored game! *grin* The first 1,000 fans through the gates gets a blue, eco-friendly Oceanic/ESPNU/Food Network/HGTV bag... great for grocery shopping! Check-check-check it out!

Get your eco-friendly Oceanic Time Warner Cable bag at this Saturday's game!
Yeah, shmall kine advertisement, but come support your 'Bows nonetheless man. They need it!
Results from last week (Celebrating Valentine's Day on Valentine's Day?)
- No: 9 (DA WINNAH!)
- Yes: 3
Happy Survey Thursday y'all! It's almost Aloha Friday!!!

First!
February 19th, 2009 at 12:19 am
I should change me handle to NeedsALife.
February 19th, 2009 at 12:25 am
I haven't been a fan since they changed their sexy short shorts to the long ones they wear these days...ha!
NeedsAHobby! I am SAD! No more monkey @$$ in clam shell! I watched a re-run of last week and I managed to remember another funny one. In the voice of a 34 Italian man who has just been in the states for 2 years: I got soh many kick in my @$$ that sometimes when I stay in di bathrrroom, I still pull shoes outtah my @$$.
February 19th, 2009 at 12:32 am
As much as I pull for them to win, I can't really say I'm a fan. They are painful to watch. I guess I watch too much big time college ball like Duke, UNC, Pitt, UConn, etc. Not even West Coast teams cut it for me. I'm hoping though that Nash can bring up the level of play in the next few years.
My ultimate dream game would be attending a Duke/UNC game at Cameron.
February 19th, 2009 at 6:22 am
Sorry, I'm not a real fan of any particular sport.
I may watch once in awhile while having some beverages with my guests at home or at their house. So when you going invite us over to your house? We like see your Japanese Garden.
Oh we did
February 19th, 2009 at 6:44 am
I can't say I'm a fan (if the standard of a fan is your sister) but I attend 1/3 to 2/3 of the home games each year. This year has been frustrating. The team has been very inconsistent. Some game the players look great and the next game they can be nonexistent. I hope they can get it together and make a run to win the tournment.
I think one year UH finishted 14-13 but Trevor Ruffin and Tony Maroney played well in the WAC tournament and UH won the NCAA bid. There is always hope.
February 19th, 2009 at 6:48 am
I'm a fan - from just before the Fabulous Five time. I only remember one guy from back then, "Sleepy" Simon. Then they was real junk, right before the Fabulous Five exploded on the scene. They junk again, but they try hard. Only watch on TV 'tho, so not a real die hard fan. Eh Ed, nice bag, nice plug!
February 19th, 2009 at 6:49 am
Good Morning Ed!
I don't have season tickets but I do go to some games. I will be there for this Saturdays game. Where are your seat? I'm in section C row 5. I see your sister seating in those "special" seats.
February 19th, 2009 at 6:50 am
I'm a fan of all UH sports but not able to attend too many games. I been to about 5-6 UH men's basketball games this year. In fact, I saw you at one of the games...you famous, brah. I also mentioned in a previous blog that I always see your sister at her primo courtside seats. I must say that they are improving and Flemings is worth seeing live at the arena. And the arena food and drinks have gone down...smart move.
February 19th, 2009 at 6:52 am
You know what Ed, college basketball just isn't the same. Back when we were in college, we had michigan's fab 5, Kentucky was deep with talent, duke was loaded with players of the year. Now, a team is lucky to have one really good guy.
So sorry, I just ain't into uh b-ball. Was cool when guys we knew were playing, like kalia mcgee and dennis harrison, and eric bentkow-(oops, not E).
But uh v-ball, I'm down for that. I watch as much as I can on k5. If I lived on Oahu, I would go down to the stan to watch. Peeps no realize, but the team is pretty good, couple weeks ago they beat northridge who was #2 at the time.
February 19th, 2009 at 6:55 am
@tita- you cannot change your handle. No get bullied by Ed. I no believe you one softie. I still flashback to the energetic, loud sista from 2 years of camp.
February 19th, 2009 at 6:55 am
Hi! Though I've never commented on your blog before, I'm a faithful reader. Just had to comment with this survey question. Yes, I'm a fan and yes I'm going to the game on Saturday! Can't wait. I won't go into more detail as I already go on and on about my love for basketball in my own blog!
February 19th, 2009 at 6:58 am
@hemaz- when I used to go to the stan, the grub was pretty Ono. They had those garlic fries . . . Killer. How's the food now?
February 19th, 2009 at 7:30 am
I enjoy watching UH sports but much prefer to watch the football or volleyball games. I've only been to Aloha Stadium or Stanley for a few FB or VB games. I'll watch the basketball games on K5. But, I can't say I'm a die hard fan. I did like watching when UH had Alika Smith & A.C. Carter though.
@kuya - they still have those garlic fries at the Stanley. Yum!
February 19th, 2009 at 7:42 am
@kuya.d, I dunno, but ate the garlic and regular fries this year and I would give it a ok rating. Garlic fries smells great but fries were sorta weak and I love garlic but after a while, it left a funny after-taste. The best garlic fries I had was at the Seattle Mariners stadium...thick, crisp on outside and potatoey on the inside and garlic chunks tasted fresh.
February 19th, 2009 at 8:54 am
When I worked at Oahu C.C., I knew Mr. Penebacker of the big 5. He was such a nice man and very humble. Otherwise, I don't know much, or care for UH B-Ball. The after-football, before the golf majors season is depressing for me.
February 19th, 2009 at 9:07 am
I'm a fairweather fan at best! Does that count. I don't go to games, but I do watch them on tv once in a while.
But I support them and root for them in spirit. I know that doesn't help too much, but better than nothing I guess.
February 19th, 2009 at 9:39 am
@hemaz- my Seattle friends have talked about those fries at mariner games, and even sports illustrated rated it among the best in all of MLB.
One day I hope to enjoy them.
@tita & @needahobbz- did you guys see top chef yet? Can we dish on that subject?
February 19th, 2009 at 9:44 am
I saw Top Chef. I wanted someone else to get eliminated.
February 19th, 2009 at 9:53 am
Am a long-time fan of UH hoops. Nash has them playing very well right now and I hope they are peaking in time for the WAC championships.
My all-time favorite player was AC Carter, who has had a very nice NBA career. As far as I know, he's also one of the few UH athletes who has given back to university. I believe he established some kind of endowment or living trust. I hope more UH athletes who go on to riches in the NFL are inspired to give back as well.
To follow up on another post: not a fan of the garlic fries at the Stanley. Waaaayyy too much garlic for my taste.
February 19th, 2009 at 10:40 am
I'm a UH basketball fan but not by your sister standards (super fan). This years team has been frustrating. The players are inconsistent. Some nights they look like all-stars and the next night they can be non-exisitent. There is still hope. I remember a Trevor Ruffin/Tony Maroney team that finished 14-13 then got hot and won the WAC tournament and the NCAA bid.
I followed UH after the Fab 5 days. Tom Henderson in my mind is still the best player UH has had.

Nah!
LOL! I not famous at all. Only cause my ugly mug stay on this page. Haha! But yeah, my sister's seats are prime. Food-wise, I usually grind the same thing over and over (Teri Burger with fries). They gotsta get more variety up in thurr like before yeah hemmaz?

February 19th, 2009 at 1:01 pm
As an idea, I LOVE UH Men's basketball. Love, uh, all, uh, UH sports. Yeah. Heh, no seriously.
Love 'em this year, too.
It's just that THIS year . . . they got PROBLEMSSSSSSSS!!!!! Win the WAC, maybe that''ll be "the thing."
But, what I REALLY feel about UH basketball this season? Nash got problems. I don't see a lot of smart decisions being made from the bench, if I'm being honest (Simon Cowell accent in tow). He gotta have a better record this year or it's, well, it's Athletic Adminstration decision time.
February 19th, 2009 at 1:04 pm
hey, NeedaHobby stole my answer! hee hee... nah, i just would have said nearly the exact same thing... except that i used to be a season ticket holding men's v-ball fan so i've been to stan sheriff many times! i dunno... today's teams just don't have the same charisma!
February 19th, 2009 at 1:47 pm
@hemajang - I went to a Mariners game last year, but shucks, I didn't try those garlic fries!
@kuya & @che - sorry, I didn't watch Top Chef yet ... it's still on my DVR. Thanks for checking before offering up any spoilers!
@snow - whoops, sorry!
February 19th, 2009 at 1:59 pm
@tita - I just noticed your entry about Top Chef. OH NO OH NO!!! I'm sad also!
He was too funny. No more fried banana in monkey a55??? And, what did he say last week, "this is not top pu55y, this is top chef!" Stefan: "airline bi*ch"?
February 19th, 2009 at 3:25 pm
@needahobbz- he did say that, broken finger and all. Watch last nites episode, the food looked good.
@all the garlic fry feedback- mahalos! I know ynaks would agree, I don't think anyone does garlic fries in Hilo, no?
February 19th, 2009 at 6:48 pm
@Hobby: SORRY! I was soo distraught I had to let it out. Hubby spoiled it for me cuz he caught the first showing and I watched the re-run. I was hoping he was just joking. argh!
@Ed: Maybe you should post a pic. Was it like Dove shorts? Or was they tiger shorts? LOL
February 19th, 2009 at 11:40 pm
@kuya & @tita - just got through watching Top Chef. It seemed like it was pretty competitive. Too bad they had to do creole and not Italian dishes, yeah? It was pretty funny when Fabio and Hosea were talking about thongs. Wow, Carla has won some awesome prizes: SB tickets and now the car!
Whaddya think of them having Leah, Jamie, and Jeff compete? Personally, I thought that it was a little weird? I don't recall them doing that in past seasons.
I was glad to see Gail back!
February 19th, 2009 at 11:42 pm
@tita & @Ed - whoa, dove shorts! I remember those. Ha, ha!
February 20th, 2009 at 12:08 am
@hobbz- I was happy to see gail back too . . . and I have to say that she's a gorgeous woman, pretty smile.
I kinda wanted stefan to go, and yeah, carla is on fire. I thought she was gonna be out back in restaurant wars. I'll go with Hosea in the finals.
February 20th, 2009 at 7:36 am

I swear, I should just post a blog that say, "Top Chef... Go!" and all y'all will go crazy with the comments. Hehe!
Haha. If I post it, this blog will become PG-13 all of the sudden. Too much leg. LOL!
LOL! I think it was PCH corduroy kine maybe. I ferget.
February 20th, 2009 at 10:20 am
Good to see another old-time UH b-ball fan on this blog (MakiSushi #7) who is old enough to remember Junious "Sleepy" Simon from back around 1966-67. I remember his backcourt partner was Lewis Lillie and future UH head coach Bruce O'Neill was on that team also. The games were at Klum Gym. After the games were switched to the Honolulu International Center (now known as Blaisdell Center), we got to see UH play against greats like Artis Gilmore (Jacksonville), Robert Parish (Centenary) and a lot of others. One of the great things about the 1970's was the Aloha Classic, where collegiate all-stars came to play a round robin tournament here after the season was pau. Got to see guys like Nate Archibald, Len Elmore, etc. Bob Nash and Tom Henderson played in that tournament representing UH.
