We Be Clubbin'

September 22nd, 2008 by World Wide Ed

For the first time in what felt like ages, I went with the lady and her friends to the W Hotel on Saturday night. I don't exactly know when it happened, but I think I've finally gotten too old for this. LOL!

A few observations that made a brutha feel this way:

* My suddenly sensitive ears started to hurt from the volume of the music
* Everyone looked like kids to me (except this one old lookin' dude that made me feel good/young. Ha!)
* I found myself complaining about the overpriced beers and thinking how much cheaper it would be to buy it on sale at Costco
* By midnight, I was tired and wanted to go home

It didn't help that I didn't know I was going clubbin' that night, and wasn't mentally prepared for it. I even had to borrow hand-me-down clothes from my friend (thanks Kelv!), which didn't help with my "game", if I were to attempt to have any.

OK, so it wasn't all that bad, and I'm pretty sure I can still pull off this "clubbin'" thang if I tried or really wanted to, but I guess these days, I've got higher priorities in life. Saving money, thinking about the future, you know, the important stuffs.

I remember the days when Thursday nights meant Oceans with the boys. Now, Thursday nights usually means a home cooked meal with the girl... and you know what? I'm perfectly content with that.

Talk to me!
* Do you or someone you know (in your/their 30s) still go clubbin'?
* Where do you like to go?
* What is your drink of choice at the club?
* How do you now spend your (former) clubbin' nights?

    Aloha Ed,

    Nope, don't know anyone, except for the daughter and son, and you know how it is, us old fogey's are not kept abreast of where they go, and even if they did tell us where, we wouldn't know Jack!

    A good evening for the older generation is a healthy meal, some form of exercise (walking, playing tennis, etc.), then watch some of those evening dramas on television. Of course, going to sleep early is always good! Doesn't help when you quit drinking 20 years ago too!

    Anyway, when you're young, I see nothing wrong with going out clubbing and having a good time. Just don't over-do it, social drinking in moderation should be followed, always designate a member of your group to drive (no liquor intake at all), because you don't want anyone of your group to get a "DUI", as that can screw up your life forever in many ways. So, if you gotta drink, do it responsibly!

    Take care and have a wonderful day!

  2. M:

    I don't go clubbing. Too old for dat. I don't like loud music where you have to scream to talk and I don't care for crowds. Besides, I don't drink.

  3. kako mochi:

    you know what they say . . . "if it's too loud, you're too old!" LOL . . . j/k :)

    i still go clubbing (i'm 29), just not as much as before . . . and yes - every thursday was oceans and saturday was pipeline!!

    just a few weeks ago, a gf and i were just planning to go out to dinner when her fren called and said he could get us into L4 - no line, no cover . . . so of course we went, but we weren't expecting to go clubbing and we were NOT dressed for the clubs! we felt kinda out of place and bummy the whole night :( so i know how you felt!

    anyway . . . i think i like cruising at a bar/lounge more than clubbing now days . . . you still get to drink and dress up and listen to music, but it's more relaxed.

  4. Chicken Grease:

    ED!!!! You went to the W?!? Oh . . . mercy. I'm going to have to cut this post short.

  5. Bran:

    My hubby and I have kids, so really not into clubs any more. I totally feel to old when I walk in and see the younger crowd. Not jealous or anything like that, just feel like I have been there and done that.
    So now when we want to get away, we head on over to Uncle Bo's. The food is ONO, the atmosphere is great, music is just right for our ears and its a place to realx and enjoy each others company.

  6. leerah:

    club? what dat? the other nite i was telling man (at 930pm, on our way home from our dinner date w/out screaming kids), "man, remember when this was the time we used to head out for our dates like a decade ago? ...and just stay out late...far away from home and dis side of the H1?" ....."now, at this time, we're headed home after only eating dinner...not even a movie."

    i used to avoid the clubs...hated them even at the tender age of "college." back then, smoking was still allowed..so I REALLY hated them. Plus, meat market! ew. skeh-beh guys hitting on you! ew! even back then i think i was already too old to go clubbing! hahhaha....

    nuttin' wrong with clubbing at this age. but if you spend all your weekends at the clubs...well then, i think there's better ways to spend your money. ...like travelling the world!

    ...mmmmm frozen margaritas! I miss those. have one for me!

  7. Coconut Willy:

    Aint it funny Ed? How all of a sudden you're old. I mean, you just don't feel like it anymore. I think the end came for me when Bobby McGee's closed. What a coincidence, it's where the W is now.

  8. Reido:

    I'm like leerah - I remember the days when we would leave the house around 9:00 - 10:00 to go out. Nowadays, I'm ready to hit the sack around that time.

    I used to bartend at World Cafe for a few years, so I fondly remember the scene. Too old for that now, though. Marriage and kids changes everything (for the better, of course)!

  9. MoOgooGuypAN:

    Oceans Club. Yah, that was the scene :twisted: No kiddies just 23 and over. Oh and that old man with the tie that used to dance it up too. Remember that guy? After a while even OC got tired because it would be the same people. Now days we just barbeque and someones house. Still drinking the green bottles and take the tequilla shots though, maybe not as much shots :lol:

  10. Melissa:

    Dude....I don't "still" go clubbin but once in a while I do go out because it's my job! Here's a couple of accounts of my recent clubbing experiences....and I'm, er, 40ish.

    All I need is for someone to ask if Jennifer is my daughter!!

    Good fatherly advice Kel Sr.! :) Mahalo!

    Yeah, yelling to speak to each other is not fun eh M!? I think I lost my voice that night. LOL!

    * kako mochi:
    i still go clubbing (i’m 29), just not as much as before . . . and yes - every thursday was oceans and saturday was pipeline!!

    Yikes! Pipeline!?!? Hopefully, it's gotten better lately, but when we used to go back in the day, it was pretty ghetto fabulous! Hehe!

    * Chicken Grease:
    ED!!!! You went to the W?!? Oh . . . mercy. I’m going to have to cut this post short.

    Hahaha! What? Ceeg! Are you disowning me now? :P

    Yeah, Uncle Bo's is fun too Bran! I know what you mean about just relaxing though...

    Yeah, sooooooooo glad that smoking is outs in Hawaii! That is the best rule everrrrr! And yeah, the funniest thing for guys is to see those skebe/poser/donkey/playa-wanna-be guys trying to ack all tantaran. And then, they get shot down! Ohhh, that was the best! Haha!

    * Coconut Willy:

    I know what you mean CDubbs, but I also think it's more of a mental thing than physical. Physically, I can still hang with the youngbucks out there. I can wear the typical collared long sleeve clubbin' striped shirt, or tight Banana muscle top, faded jeans and gel up my hair all spiky. But I'd rather spend my time and energy on real relationships, quality conversations and good food, etc. Once in a while is good fun though. Especially being the wingman to my boys. :)

    * Reido:

    Ho, World Cafe! Now there's a name I haven't heard for a long time Reido! Hehe! I always wanted to bartend, but never got around to doing it. Ah, perhaps when I retire in my 40s I'll try it for a hobby.

    * MoOgooGuypAN:

    LOLOLOL! I remember that guy MoOgooGuypAN! I wonder where he goes nowadays. I forget who it was but someone I knew actually knew his name. Too funny. I always wondered what his family thought of him going out so often. 8)

  12. leerah:

    TANTARUN! those guys were the best! I LOVED shooting them down! I felt all ugeez but it was hella fun! It was like doing a Lorena Bobbit and a guy's ego! muwahahaha!

  13. Melissa:

    p.s. drink of choice is anything vodka! it doesn't make this old lady too tired.

  14. JuSaMee:

    a bunch of my friends still go clubbin' pretty frequently. their newest spot is senor frogs on lewers...ages range from mid 20 to like 30-32. i was jus thinkin' the other day i thought it was odd and when would they stop going. me and the hubby will go, on occassion if it's a birthday or bachelor/bachelorette thing. one of my bro-in-law DJ's and from time to time he'll call us up to come listen to him spin...

    but like you i feel old (i'm 28) or maybe a better word is mature, cuz i'll see these barely legal kids tryin' to act all grown and it's annoying...i'm not really a drinker, drinker...but i REALLY LIKED midori sours!! :) now days, instead of clubbin' we'll go to the movies or kick it at someone's house...it's cheaper and quieter, sometimes! lol!

    hmmmm don't really go clubbin' here in Hawaii since I came back..... I did go to the LV clubs though, cuz had concierge friends who got hooked up. Otherwise I no go... i ain't waiting in no dang long line..... or gonna drop da big bucks for bottle service, you crazy! Oh... and I'm in my 30's...I go for the dancing, drinking and fun with friends... I'm not looking for a hook up hehe.... Sometimes I'd feel so tired and old, never like dress up and stuff..... took too much effort bahaha.... but some of those concierge friends are older than me, so I had to go!

  17. Shauna:

    hey ed! i totally agree with you! can't believe it was only several years ago that we used to go so much! i used to run into you! haha! having the night shift worked out well during that time cause i could go right after work when the crowd was good and get home in the early hours of the morning and still sleep in! my poor friend who came with me had the morning shift but we'd have so much fun! now i'm always so tired — mornings and night!! sigh... :(
