Fave Five Friday - Hawaii Radio Stations

July 11th, 2008 by World Wide Ed

I thought this might be a fun lil’ addition to this here blog. Let’s do a mini poll of sorts, and see what you peeps’ fave five of just about anything is. I’ll start. Today’s five: Hawaii Radio Stations. (which usually equates to the 5 or 6 buttons on your car stereo eh?) Well, at least it is fo’ me. Hurr we go!

  • 104.3 FM - Power 104.3 (also on Oceanic Digital Channel 0858)
  • 102.7 FM- 102.7 Da Bomb (also also on Oceanic Digital Channel 0854)
  • 93.9 FMHot 93-9 (also also on Oceanic Digital Channel 0868)
  • 100.3 FM- KCCN FM100 (also also on Oceanic Digital Channel 0852)
  • 98.5 FM - Island 98.5 (also also on Oceanic Digital Channel 0851)
  • 93.1 FM - 93.1 The Zone (also also on Oceanic Digital Channel 0851)

These aren’t necessarily in the 1-5 order for me. Just gots it that way (grouped and numeric) so it’s easier to channel surf. Situational faves are: Hot 93-9 in the morning, 92.3 (KSSK) for traffic updates, 96.3 (Krater 96) during the 2 Million Dollar Money Mix periods ;) , and AM1420 (ESPN1420) during sporting events (esp after UH basketball games).

Shoots! Have a good weekend ya’ll!

  1. kako mochi:

94.7 at work . . . love to sing all the old school songs (and after 6pm for the delilah radio show!)
93.9 in the car going to work . . . the wake up crew cracks me up!
    102.7 &/or 104.3 when there’s commercials on 93.9
98.5 for the island and reggae
101.9 for the rock & alternative stuff!

i loved it when 93.1 played 80s all the time . . . wish they had that again, or at least a few hours a day so i can reminisce ;)

BTW . . . when i’m home and washing dishes/cleaning house, i’ll put the tv on the 80s channel (is it 893?) and rock out to that!!

  2. Rodney:

101.1 - Finally, a smooth jazz station in Hawaii

  3. Miss Pris:

When I listen to the radio (which isn’t very often) I like to listen to Star 101.9 FM. This station plays the best mix of alternative music…old and new! And the best part part is that after every song they play, they let you know WHO the artist is and the TITLE of the song…(makes it alot easier to find it on itunes).

From time to time I will listen to Power 104.3 and 93.1 The Zone…but alot ot their music is replayed and replayed to the point where it just gets irritating to hear.

When I’m in the mood for some local music….I like KCCN FM 100 and Island 98.5….but I’d much rather listen to my CD’s or ipod!

Alrightee…you have yourself a great weekend too!!! Peace out!!

  4. Chicken Grease:

You gonna love this one, Ed: I have Oceanic digital cable (there. Product placement. Now, pay me. Bwwaaaaaaa. I picked up digital as soon as it became available), and I listen to the Music Choice channels. Commercial-free!!!!!! Who needs stinkin’ commercials?

I listen (preferred in order; and, the descriptions are direct quotes from ya’ll Oceanic ‘page, Ed):

    Classical Masterpieces
“Experience power, passion, and elegance through the masters’ works as interpreted by the world’s greatest performers. J.S. Bach, Beethoven, Rachmaninoff, Bernstein, Argerich”

    Smooth Jazz
“Feel the funk and experience the fresh, soulful, and polished grooves mixed with a rock/pop base. Larry Carlton, Bob James, Dave Grusin, Spyro Gyra, Art Porter, Diana Krall”

    ’80s
“This is where you go-go when you want to walk like an Egyptian or hear doves cry with the best pop songs of the ’80s. Prince, Madonna, Michael Jackson, Cyndi Lauper, George Michael, The Bangles”

    Classic R&B
“Groove to classic R&B, Funk, Soul, and Motown from the ’60s,’70s, and ’80s. The Temptations, Aretha Franklin, James Brown, Marvin Gaye, The O’Jays”

I mostly listen to the Classic Masterpieces channel. Great to have on when I’m foldin’ clothes, reading, doing work from work, or cooking something.

In boku wa kuruma, I really don’t have the rajio on. I find it distracting.

  5. Reido:

Most of the time, I’m listening to 96.3 (showing my age). The other faves are 92.3, 93.1, 98.5 and 101.9. I used to listen to 101.9 all the time, but like I said, I’m getting old. Add 1420 AM to the mix for live sports and after game commentary.

    Have a great weekend!!

  6. skycastles:

I listen to pretty much everything. I think it depends on what I’m doing.

One of my faves when I just wanna chill is that Frank Sinatra-ish station? I don’t even know what the number is - 99.5?

When I’m cleaning house, I listen to Oldies 107.9.

Down at the beach or at a family picnic, it’s gotta be a Hawaiian station.

Getting ready to go out, it’s gotta be one of the booty stations lol

In college I was taking Japanese so I would try to listen to the Japanese station and J-pop. That was short lived though since I couldn’t really catch on to what they were saying.

I also like KRTR when they have those dedication at night. They play all the old school love songs.

And yesterday I just stumbled upon 101.1 that Rodney mentioned. I was like, where did this come from?

  7. pink lady:

i love 93.9 on wednesday mornings when they do wild wahine wednesdays. cracks me up every time.

  8. Jorge:

Hey Ed, I think you listed 6. Anyways, I mainly listen to AM 1500 “The Team” in the mornings for sports talk and AM 1420 “The Sports Animals” in the afternoon. Also listen to 104.3, 93.9 and 93.1 for music.

  9. Richard:

    88.1 - Hawaii Public Radio
101.9 - Star101.9… “Hawaii’s Favorite Alternative”. not really, but it helps me get my fix.
I also listen to 90.3, KTUH from time to time, but i find that they play way too much reggae, and the DJs talk way too much.

I really, really miss Radio Free Hawaii, which used to be on 102.7, i believe, way back when. now THAT was a radio station that i could listen to 24/7 and never get tired of it.

  10. Kel Sr.:

Aloha Ed and all you youngsters out there!

Nothing like 107.9 Oldies but Goodies for guys like me most of the time and 92.3 KSSK in the AM to listen to traffic updates, Price’s butchering of the english language and Perry’s slanted one sided points of view and KCCN for local boy music when I feel like it!

But since this is limited to fave Hawaii Radio Stations, I can’t tell you that out of all the blog sites in the Advertiser, you’re my fave! Hahahahahaha!

Have a wonderful and safe weekend!

  11. Rodney:

    @skycastles
I forgot to mention that I also listen to a couple of stations that you listed: The Jewel - 99.5 and Oldies 107.9.

And when I want to pretend I’m in Vegas, I listen to Sunny 106.5 (www.ksne.com) on the computer.

  12. Ed:

    * kako mochi, Rodney, Miss Pris, Chicken Grease, Reido, skycastles, pink lady, Jorge, Richard, Kel Sr.

All excellent choices! I forgot about oldies… NOT! Haha! Nah, my co-worker listens to this one in his car and quizzes me all the time on who the artist is. Have a great weekend all! :)

  13. issunboshi:

I am a young guy but as posted on Rodney’s blog am a fan of oldies music too…I like 99.5 but have to admit that it throws me off when they play oldies covers. So when you hear an oldies song now they play the Michael Buble version or the Rod Stewart covers. Cool, but not the same, you know?

I also listen to 101.9, 93.9, 93.1 and for when i feel like listening to something from my generation, but have to admit that i sometimes have a hard time getting into some of it. Too much booty-shaking for me…

When i listen to talk radio it’s usually sports talk…1500 am in the mornings on M, Tu, Th, and F…have a hard time w/ Jeff Portnoy for some reason. and then 1420 am in the afternoons…the sports animals are pretty nuts and Chris Hart is pretty funny.

  14. hemajang:

Listen mostly to NPR, 89.3. I enjoy Fresh Air with Terry Gross and Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me in the afternoon drive home and on Saturdays to the Splendid Kitchen and Clic-Clack brothers. And 88.1 for classical music.

Also 99.5 The Jewell for music of the 50’s and 60’s. Good fun trying to remember the title and artist.

And the UH station for odds and ends, a real eclectic mix of roots music, politics and culture.

I also enjoy Alice Cooper on the classic rock station. And then there is UH sports on 1420, although Bobby Curran is getting on my nerve and the newcomer 1500 with Leahey and Leahey. I’m beginning to like Rob DeMello, young but really mature sensibilities.

Yeah, I miss Radio Free Hawaii with Norm Winter. Station was genius and introduced me to Grunge and alternative music.

  15. dewi s:

radio . . .only for civil defense broadacasts in emergencies.

here’s a lsample of what’s on my itunes:

one day you will - lady antebellum
no one else knows - building 429
    i love you - keahiwai
the way you look at me - christian bautista
she goes all the way - rascal flatts

  16. frankie:

I miss Radio Free Hawaii as well and those Dance Hall Crasher concerts! (I went to both!)

I hate to say it, but I wish Christian radio in Hawaii was better (or had more options). KAIM’s playlist is antiquated.

Yeah, gotsta admit, I like the oldies too. I asked my co-worker this though. When is the cutoff for “oldies”? Do you think in 20 years, some of today’s booty shakers would be on an “oldies” channel? ;)

Hehe, and traffic too right? I only agree with your choices of Rascal Flatts, Ekolu, Brian McKnight and Keahiwai. :P
