David Wins American Idol Season 7!

May 21st, 2008 by World Wide Ed

Thanks to our time zone, we in Hawaii will be one of the last to find out the results of this season’s American Idol competition today (unless the spoiler boards is your friend), but, for the most part, wasn’t last night’s David vs. David outcome a shocker?

All along, I’ve been praising David Cook for his innovative style and star readiness factor, two key ingredients I figgah would make him the ideal A.I. winner. But David Archuleta had other plans son! Bruddah came out to win it all “dawg!”

You could see a look of determination in his eye (the eye of the tiger if you will) that you’ve never seen before, and you could hear the conviction in his voice with every note. His three choices (one chosen by Clive Davis) were spot on:

  1. “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down On Me”
  2. “In This Moment”
  3. “Imagine”

While Cook’s three choices:

  1. “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For”
  2. “Dream Big”
  3. “The World I Know”

fell surprisingly flat. I was actually bored to tears (no, not real tears silly - see Robots Don’t Cry).

An air of arrogance (which I’ve seen signs of in the past) also started to bother me when watching Cook last night. If it were based strictly on last night, from a pure singing standpoint, David Archuleta, in my mind, wins hands down. But you never know what the voting public thinks and does.

Either way, it was an interesting night to put the finishing touches to this season’s American Idol don’tcha think? Have a happy hump day ya’ll!

P.S. Congrats to the Chicago Bulls yesterday for vaulting all the way up from the 9th spot to the #1 pick in this year’s NBA Draft. Here’s how the top 14 went down:

  1. Chicago Bulls
  2. Miami Heat
  3. Minnesota Timberwolves
  4. Seattle Supersonics
  5. Memphis Grizzlies
  6. New York Knicks
  7. L.A. Clippers
  8. Milwaukee Bucks
  9. Charlotte Bobcats
  10. New Jersey Nets
  11. Indiana Pacers
  12. Sacramento Kings
  13. Portland Trail Blazers
  14. Golden State Warriors

Talk to me:
- Who do you think won Season 7 of American Idol? David Cook or David Archuleta?
- Who’s your NBA team? Are you happy with the lottery results?

Only watched David Cook sing the first song and Archuleta sing “Imagine.” It’s a great John Lennon song but Archuleta made it his song. As Simon commented, it was a knockout punch in the battle of Davids. Thought he was the going to be the winnah from the beginning. He has a real good feel for ballads and got those puppy dog eyes that appeals to both old and young.

Mens crying again, last night. Boo-hoo. Well, Cook was sobered up when Simon put bruddah into his place, heh.

I’ll just repost what I mentioned in another blog:

Cook is cooked!!!! His performances just weren’t there last night. Archuletta’s — who I said from the beginning was THE one (see Cat’s post when this whole American Idol season started. Ah, who the heck am I, though, heh) — performances throughout the year showed he should be in the final two shows.

Cook, I dunno, man, what he was doing this whole time — the Hello and Billy Jean renditions, etc. — just seemed too contrived, you know? And he just wasn’t there last night.

Was Idol’s version of Jan 1’s Sugar Bowl, you ask me, with Archuletta being Georgia and Cook being UH.

Archuletta IS the type who can be marketed around the world and I don’t think the numbers who voted for him are any coincidence — this guy makes the teens cry, he’s reminds old folks of their grandchildren, and all age ranged in between love ‘em. Hey, look at me, I HATE current pop music (will be quite refreshing when Archuletta’s records start hitting the airwaves and eliminate that Keep Bleedin’ keep-keep-bleedin’ tune (who is from, yes, I know the UK Idol equivalent, X Factor — yeah, Simon’s pick. You ever see him on that show? VEEEEERRRRY different Simon; bruddah wears a suit, stands up and claps. Should check in out) that’s simply driving me bonkers. I couldn’t STAND that song Imagine ’til Archuletta sang it. Teen gals who cry in their rooms over idols sell records, concert tickets, and merchandise in an exponentially million’d if not billion’d style; Archeletta can help the label and his sponsers acquire that wealth. Like Michael C tells Sal Tessio at the end of GF, part I, this is just business.

    Archuletta can restore pop.

Cook is just another drop in the post-grunge era.

We’ll see if Archuletta can really become the American Idol that has more staying appeal than Kelly Clarkson has successfully done.

Was nice to see Studdard last night. He needs a new manager — haven’t heard of any new Studdard songs in the past few years.

The Bulls have had a ton of great lottery picks over the last decade and have never drafted anything close to superstar. Beasley might just be it though.

Anyway, I’ve been a Heat fan FOREVER (like 1 of the 2 of us in Hawaii) and am quite happy with the number 2 spot, which I really hope becomes Derrick Rose. We are BACK, baby!

  4. snow:

I’ve been a David Archuleta fan since day one… the kid has a lot of charisma (he seems very genuine) and, yes, those puppy dog eyes! He blew David Cook out of the water last night… you could tell that he put everything he had out there. I like David Cook, too, but I didn’t think he had his best night.

Don’t ask me, I’ll be watching The Ultimate Fighter!

    * hemajang, Chicken Grease and snow: Sorry for the late response. I guess we all know who won by now. LOL!
    * imcrazyim2: Heat!!!??? Ho, die-hard yeah? Nah, congrats!
    * frankie: Hear hear!
